Nanyang Nature Society
Nanyang Nature Society is a CCA in Nanyang Girls’ High School aiming to create a zero waste school and environmental learning platform for the Nanyang community, and to advocate for environmental causes and promote the green movement in NYGH. NYNS has been pushing out initiatives to encourage students to lead a greener life.
Listed below are some of their initiatives:
Chinese New Year Container collection: Nanyang organises a CNY container collection drive every CNY. This donation drive aims to reduce the waste produced during the CNY period by giving the donated containers to a selected organisation for reuse. In 2020, 200 containers were collected, which were donated to Edible Garden City to use for their gardening and eco-enzyme workshops.
Flea Market: This initiative aims to protect the environment by discouraging consumerism and foster a spirit of reusing and recycling by donating pre-loved items like old clothes and stationery. These items were then given or sold to others, with proceeds going to Nature Society Singapore.

Australian Bushfires Fundraiser: in collaboration with Theatre Club Nanyang, funds were raised to mitigate the consequences of the bushfire. Donations were given to Red Cross Singapore to support their relief and recovery efforts in Australia. A total of $627.15 was raised.

Earth and Science Fortnight 2019
organised by the NYGH Science Department and NYNS
For this event, NYNS organised activities during recess, such as upcycling workshops and harvesting of vegetables from the school garden. The Science Department also organised initiatives such as Learning Journeys to nature trails and vertical farms, and reducing plastic waste in the canteen by no provision of straws and plastic cutlery during the 2 weeks. These activities aim to raise awareness about climate change and different ways to mitigate the situation, as well as encourage students to adopt more environmentally-friendly habits.
Zero Waste Nanyang
Zero Waste Nanyang is a ground-up student initiated environmental group which pushes out environmental initiatives in NYGH. Zero Waste Nanyang aims to inculcate environmental consciousness and habits in the Nanyang school community.
Some initiatives Zero Waste Nanyang have introduced include:
Express Queue and Bring your own container (BYOCCC): This initiative encourages students to bring their own cutlery and containers to drop off their lunchbox at the canteen stall, and collect their filled lunchboxes during their recess or lunch timings. Students can paste a post-it on their containers to state when they will be collecting the containers, allowing them to skip the long queues. This aims to reduce waste produced by disposable containers and cutlery in the school canteen.
ToiletRollSG: In 2019, Zero Waste Nanyang rolled out a challenge to NYGH to collect as many toilet rolls as possible. In 4 months, NYGH managed to collect a total of 572.41kg of toilet rolls – a massive 85,680 toilet rolls. The collected toilet rolls were given to VEOLIA, Singapore’s largest recycling company.
